The General Staff and the Verkhovna Rada will consider the possibility of reducing the list of military specialties for women. Registration will also be voluntary.
The Ministry of Defense has submitted proposals to the Verkhovna Rada on military registration for women – they want to make it voluntary. This was announced by Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar on Facebook.
“Today we are working on the bill with the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence. We have repeatedly said that the military registration of women is established by law. Therefore, the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff cannot change it themselves. This is the power of the parliament. If the changes are approved, the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff will implement them,” Malyar wrote.
Malyar also said that the General Staff and the Verkhovna Rada will consider the possibility of reducing the list of military specialties for women. He noted that now there is no urgent need in the state to significantly increase the number of women in military records.
“At the same time, the Armed Forces still need specialties and specialists in medicine, radio engineering, and food technology. Therefore, if changes are made to the aforementioned law, the General Staff will develop changes to the list of military specialties for women and reduce the list of optimal needs. I remind you again “We are talking about voluntary military registration,” the deputy minister summarized.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense published an order on military registration for women. It provides that from October 1 of this year, women with certain specialties and/or professions will be registered for military service.
But later, the creation of the register of women liable for military service was postponed to January 1, 2023.
