Joe Biden expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as “to all the people who benefited from his belief in a better world.”
The last leader of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, risked his career for the sake of “a different future.” This is what US President Joe Biden said, the press service of the White House said the previous day.
“After decades of brutal political repression, he (Gorbachev – ed.) adopted democratic reforms. He believed in glasnost and perestroika, openness and perestroika, not only as slogans, but as a way forward for to the people of the Soviet Union after so many years of isolation and wandering,” Biden said.
Few Soviet officials, he said, had the courage to recognize the need for change.
“These are the actions of a rare leader – someone with the imagination to see the possibility of a different future and the courage to risk his entire career to achieve it. The result is a safer world and more freedom for to millions of people,” asserted the US President.
Biden expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as “to all the people who benefited from his belief in a better world.”
Recall that on August 30, in Moscow, at the age of 92, the former President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev died after a serious illness.
Gorbachev had earlier said that the world would be better, more stable, safer and fairer if the USSR still existed.
