The European Union (EU) donated 5.5 million tablets to Ukraine potassium iodide to protect the population of the country from possible radiation exposure, given that due to the Russian invasion of the former Soviet republic, hostilities were fought around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.
potassium iodide is a non-radioactive iodine salt that can help prevent the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine, thereby protecting the thyroid from damage that can be caused by radiation.
The thyroid gland is the part of the body that is most sensitive to radioactive iodine.
“Safety Precautions”
The European Commission (EC) on Tuesday said in a statement that on August 26, the government of Ukraine applied to a public club for potassium iodide “as a preventive security measure to increase the level of protection around the Zaporozhye NPP.”
The pills will be used “under limited conditions to prevent the thyroid from absorbing inhaled or ingested radioactive iodine,” Brussels said.
In response to the message from Kyiv, the Emergency Response Coordination Center mobilized 5.5 million tablets potassium iodide per Ukraine through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, including 5 million from rescEU emergency reserves and 500,000 from Austria.
With a total financial cost of around €500,000, most of the assistance will be provided Ukraine from the rescEU nature reserve located in Germany.
“No nuclear power plant should be used as a theater of war. It is unacceptable that the lives of the civilian population be put at risk. All hostilities around the Zaporozhye NPP must be stopped immediately,” said European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarczych.
IAEA visit
Pro-Russian administration of Energodar, a city in the south Ukraine controlled by the Russian army, which houses the Zaporozhye plant, today condemned a new Ukrainian attack on the plant.
The mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headed by its director, Argentinean Rafael Grossi, made a trip on Monday to Ukraine and the plant is expected to arrive this week.
The mission consists of 14 experts who will be responsible for checking the status of the station, which has been controlled by Russians since March but managed by Ukrainian technicians.
According to the IAEA, the experts were tasked with assessing the physical damage to the plant, determining the operability of emergency and security systems, analyzing the situation of Ukrainian employees, and taking urgent protective measures.
