The government of Ukraine stated that Russian forces they are threatening families in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions that their children will be taken away from them if they do not agree to send them this year to schools that are already under Russian control.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko denounced on Twitter threats to send these children to orphanages. “Moscow is using education as a tool of repression,” he said.
Ukraine called for “urgent” intervention by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to what he considers a “crime” on the part of Russia.
The school year has begun in Ukraine marked by a devastating military offensive launched in February by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The UN estimates that one in ten training centers have been damaged or completely destroyed, and accuses the warring parties of using the schools for military purposes.
US accuses Russia of committing ‘atrocities’
Last Wednesday, the United States assured that the “show trials” to be held in Mariupol against Ukrainian “defenders” were a Kremlin maneuver designed to divert attention from the “overwhelming atrocities” that Russian forces would commit.
“The planned show trials are illegal and a mockery of justice, and we strongly condemn them,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
“All members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including domestic and foreign volunteers, are entitled to the status of prisoners of war in the event of capture and must be provided with appropriate treatment and protection in accordance with the Geneva Convention,” the US official said.
The UN sees “alarm signals” in Zaporozhye
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that some areas, including the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, are experiencing a “dangerous escalation” where there are “warning signs” that suggest self-destruction in the event of an accident.
Guterres told the UN Security Council that humanitarian progress does not hide the fact that “the fighting shows no signs of stopping” in the country.
The head of the UN is “deeply concerned” about the situation at the Zaporozhye plant, controlled by Russian troops. “Any action that could compromise the physical integrity or safety of the plant is unacceptable,” he said.
