“The agenda of the government meeting on August 30 included the issue of denunciation or unilateral termination of the agreement between the governments of Latvia and Belarus on the basic principles of cross-border cooperation,” the report said.
It is indicated that this agreement was signed and entered into force in 1998. The document specifies the administrative-territorial units of Latvia to which this agreement applies. The purpose of the agreement is to promote cross-border cooperation between the local authorities of the two countries.
Initially, the contract was to be concluded for 10 years, but then it was automatically extended for another five years, if neither party expressed a desire to terminate it.
“Since Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine, and Belarus participated in it and supported it, the termination of the agreement will be part of the measures to prevent the invasion, the Latvian authorities believe … The existing that five-year term of the agreement ends on July 9, 2023,” the agency wrote.
The previous day, Latvia announced an increase in the number of illegal immigrants at the border with Belarus. On average, it’s 12-15 people a day.
