The Pentagon ordered NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine. The amount of the contract for the purchase of national advanced surface-to-air missile systems exceeds $182 million.
Estimated production completion date is August 2024. NASAMS will be transferred to Ukraine in response to the country’s needs for protection from airborne threats.
This is a long-term program to strengthen Ukrainian air defense, that is, air defense systems will not arrive tomorrow. Anti-aircraft systems will be produced in the USA specifically for our country. The production period under the contract is until August 23, 2024, but the manufacturers promised to transfer the anti-aircraft guns as soon as possible.
NASAMS is an anti-aircraft missile system that uses AMRAAM missiles to combat air targets (aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles). Depending on the modification of the missile, the range of the complex is from 20 to 180 km.
Ukraine will join a dozen countries around the world that rely on NASAMS to fend off many threats, including cruise missiles, aircraft and unmanned systems.
Raytheon Missiles & Defense and our partners are diligently working to quickly deliver this critical, proven air defense system to help the Ukrainian people defend their homeland, said Raytheon Missiles & Defense spokesman Tom Laliberti.
At the end of July, a spokesman for the US Department of Defense said at a briefing that Washington was in the process of purchasing the Norwegian NASAMS air defense system, which Ukraine should subsequently supply.
