Venezuela and Colombia announced the official resumption of diplomatic relations with the arrival in Caracas on Sunday of Colombian Ambassador Armando Benedetti, appointed by the new president. Gustav Petro.
“Relations with Venezuela should never have been severed, we are brothers, and we cannot be separated by an imaginary line, especially the public policy of the state, as happened with President (Ivan) Duque, we are going to restore relations with Venezuela,” Benedetti said. on his official Twitter account.
diplomat Colombia assured that more than 8 million compatriots live off bilateral trade with Venezuelatherefore, one of the goals is to restore trade relations between the two countries.
Upon arrival in Venezuela, Benedetti was received by Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Rander Peña Ramirez.
“On behalf of Nicolás Maduro, we welcomed to the country Armando Benedetti, appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Our historical ties call us to work together for the benefit of our peoples. Welcome!” in a tweet with images of the meeting.
Petro and Maduro announced on August 11 the names of their diplomatic representatives: former foreign minister Felix Plasencia is the Venezuelan ambassador to Bogota, while Benedetti will be on a mission in Caracas.
Plasencia was Minister of Foreign Affairs from August 2021 to May 2022 and Ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021. For his part, Benedetti, 54, is one of the first traditional politicians to join Petro’s leadership after he reached the Senate in 2006 as part of the Uribe-founded party.
The two countries broke off relations in 2019, marking the height of tension in two decades of confrontation between Chavismo and Alvaro Uribe’s government that ended with Petro’s rise to power.
The previous restoration was impossible because the previous president, Duque, did not recognize Maduro as president, but opposition leader Juan Guaidó, considering the former’s re-election rigged.
