President Jair Bolsonaro and former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will take part this Sunday in Brazil’s first televised election campaign debate, one of the most anticipated moments ahead of the October elections.
For the first time, two arch-rivals, central figures in this country’s recent history, will face off in what is considered the most polarized election since the return to democracy in 1985.

LulaThe 76-year-old poll favorite confirmed his presence on Saturday. “See you at the Band (Rede Bandeirantes station) tomorrow (Sunday) at 9pm,” Leftist tweeted, along with an image of a digital calendar with a scheduled commitment.
Far-right Bolsonaro, 67, has not officially confirmed his participation, but according to campaign sources cited by several local media outlets, he is also expected to take part.
The station reported that ” Jair Bolsonaro was last Saturday at the Band studio (in São Paulo) to check on the security of the president during the debate.”
Organized by a Brazilian media group including Rede Bandeirantes and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, the debate is the first on the campaign calendar for the October 2 elections.

How are they doing with the elections?
Lulawho ruled Brazil from 2003 to 2010, leads the election race with 47% of the intention to vote against 32% BolsonaroAccording to a survey by the Datafolha Institute published on August 18. Other polls also give the lead to the trade unionist, although by a smaller margin.
Both candidates will sit next to each other during the debate, according to the draw of places held by the organizers.
In addition to Lula and Bolsonaro, the meeting hopes to bring together four other candidates, including former finance minister Ciro Gomez (PDT, centre-left); and Senator Simone Tebet (MDB, center), third (7%) and fourth (2%) in the polls.
Within three hours, applicants will answer questions from moderators, a group of journalists, and will also be able to ask questions to their opponents.

Bolsonaro, always controversial
Bolsonaro said last Friday that he should “participate” in the debate, although he fears becoming a favorite target of his opponents.
“At one point I thought I shouldn’t go, now I think I should. I will be shot, they will shoot at me all the time (…), but I think my strategy will work. “, the president said in an interview with Young Pan radio.
For safety reasons, there will be no spectators in the studio.
In 2018, when he won the election, Bolsonaro only participated in the first two presidential debates. A month before the first round, he was stabbed during a campaign event, and after the operation, he no longer participated in the debate.
Neither Lula nor former President Fernando Enrique Cardoso (PSDB, center) participated in the debate until the first round, when they sought re-election in 2006 and 1998, respectively. (AFP)
