The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), founded in 1957 under the auspices of the United Nations and headed by Argentine diplomat Rafael Grossi, is based in Vienna, Austria. It is the IAEA “International Center for Cooperation in the Nuclear Sector”. “Together with its 175 member states and many partners, it works to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technology.” Since the ratification of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1968, it has also been responsible for verifying that signatory states respect their obligations.
