A strike by field service personnel at Portway due to dissatisfaction with their working conditions resulted in the cancellation of almost 30 flights at Portuguese airports this Friday and is expected to reach 100 cancellations during the day.
The National Union of Civil Aviation Workers (SINTAC) has calculated that in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, the commitment is 90%, 85% in Porto, 60% to 70% in Funchal (Madeira) and 40% to 50%. % in Faro (Algarve) among the employees of one of the main ground handling companies at the country’s airports.
“Is strike well shows the dissatisfaction of these workers and we hope that through this the company will be able to open up for dialogue,” union leader Pedro Figureido told the press.
The strike will last until Sunday
By strikewhich started today and will run until Sunday, Lisbon had 20 canceled flights, but the figure is expected to rise to 60 this Friday, and Porto has 40 canceled flights.
They denounce “bad faith” on the part of the company in years of negotiations and are asking for salary upgrades for promotions, better food and rest conditions, and holiday pay, among other measures cited by SINATC in the call to strike.
ANA-Airports of Portugal warned this Thursday that twenty airlines would impact its operations, including Air Canada, American Airlines, Brussels Airlines, EasyJet, Latam and Turkish Airlines.
The union also condemned the presence of organizations that replace striking workers with external services, and assured that it had passed information about the situation to the authorities.
In statements to Lusa, Portway’s sources ensured that the company “did not outsource services to fight the strike” and indicated that “airlines and airports can legally do so.”
