LONDON (AP) – The office of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Tuesday it will be fined for violating COVID -19 regulations following allegations by the parties held in government offices. Treasurer Rishi Sunak will also be fined.
The Partgate scandal has angered many in Britain, with dozens of politicians and officials being investigated over allegations that the government ignored restrictions on its own pandemic.
Police sent questionnaires to more than 100 people, including the prime minister, and questioned witnesses as part of the investigation.
Johnson has denied any wrongdoing, but appears to have participated in several dozen events at the offices of Miss Downing St. 10 and other government buildings being investigated by police.
Opponents and some members of the ruling Conservative Party said Johnson should step down if he is fined for breaking rules in other parts of the country during a pandemic.
The scandal left Johnson’s office on the brink of extinction before Russia launched a war on Ukraine more than a month ago, giving British politicians more urgent priority and throwing the scandal from the headlines. .
But police continued to investigate dozens of politicians and officials.
