Israel today launched a missile attack on positions pro-Iranian militias stationed in the province of Hama, in the west Syriaamid escalating tensions between these armed groups and US forces in the Arab country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Israeli fighter jets attacked a number of positions and warehouses belonging to “Iranian-backed militias” on the outskirts of the city of Masyaf, an NGO based in the United Kingdom and a wide network of field staff, the statement said.
The official Syrian news agency SANA confirmed that the country’s air defenses were trying to shoot down “hostile air targets” in the area, without providing further details.
However, a Syrian military source, who wished to remain anonymous, explained to Efe that this Israeli bombing and that, for the time being, the impact of the shells has started a forest fire near the road linking Masyaf and Wadi al-Aaiun.
US bombing
The action began after four pro-Iranian militias were killed and three US soldiers were slightly wounded in a series of attacks over the past 24 hours. cross attacks between the parties in the province of Deir ez-Zur in eastern Syria.
Washington, a close ally of Israel, yesterday bombed Tehran-backed militias’ depots in Deir ez-Zur and the camp of the Fatemiyun Brigade, made up mostly of Afghan Shiite fighters recruited from Iranian soil.
The US bombing, in retaliation for another rocket attack by militias ten days earlier, sparked a series of crossfire attacks in eastern Syria as clear progress was made in talks to restart the Iran nuclear deal.
According to the Observatory, today’s attack is the twenty-first attack by the Jewish state on Syrian territory this year and the third recorded in Hama.
Israel regularly takes action of this kind against a neighboring country where it believes the threat for their security, the presence of pro-Iranian and Lebanese armed groups associated with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
