The Chinese Court of Appeal confirmed on Thursday death sentence handed down to an American citizen for the murder of his girlfriend, considering the sentence “appropriate”.
last april, Shadid Abdulmatin was sentenced to death at first instance for stabbing his 21-year-old Chinese girlfriend in the face and neck on a date where they were to discuss their relationship problems.
The man appealed the verdict, but the Supreme People’s Court of eastern Zhejiang province on Thursday rejected his appeal, an official statement said.
According to the court, Shadid Abdulmatin he threatened the young woman after she told him several times that she wanted to end the relationship.
The events took place in June 2021 when they met one night near a bus stop in Ningbo, about 150 kilometers south of Shanghai.
Shadid Abdulmatin he appeared with a knife and “stabbed Chen several times in the neck and face, causing her to lose a large amount of blood” and died soon after.
The Court of Appeal stressed that the initial death sentence was “justified” and that the defendant’s trial was in accordance with the law.
The US Embassy in Beijing did not immediately comment.

Advocacy groups claim that China more prisoners are executed here each year than in any other country, although executions of Westerners are rare.
According to the official Xinhua news agency, the most recent known case is that of Akmal Sheikh, a Brit who was executed in 2009 for heroin trafficking.
In 2015 China reduced from 55 to 46 crimes for which the death penalty is provided.
Among them are separatism, voluntary killings, rape and drug trafficking, but not pimping or arms smuggling. (AFP)
