The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant loses contact with the power line at least twice a day, which could lead to a nuclear catastrophe.
The head of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, announced the need for an urgent departure of a mission of experts from the atomic energy agency to the Zaporizhzhya NPP in connection with reports of its disconnection from external operating power line with a voltage of 750 kV. This was stated in the IAEA message published on Thursday, August 25.
“Almost every day there is a new incident happening at or near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. We have no time to waste. I intend to personally lead the IAEA mission to the plant in the next few days to help stabilize the situation on nuclear safety,” he said.
The Zaporozhye NPP loses power line connection at least twice a day, but the plant is currently operating while remaining connected to a 330 kV line from a nearby thermal power plant, which can provide backup that power if necessary, the agency said.
Ukraine also informed the IAEA that as a result of the power line cut, two ZNPP reactors were disconnected from the power grid and emergency protection systems were triggered, Grossi said.
All six power units remained disconnected from the grid.
It was noted that the six-reactor ZNPP had four external power lines, but three of them were lost earlier.
The agency explained that a reliable power supply is essential to nuclear safety. In case of loss of external power supply, Zaporizhzhya NPP, like other nuclear power plants around the world, has diesel generators for backup power.
Earlier, the IAEA said they intended to visit the ZNPP in early September.
Recall that on August 25 Zaporizhzhya NPP for the first time in history was completely disconnected from the network. Lines of communication in the Ukrainian system were damaged as a result of the continuous shelling of the Russian Armed Forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is one step away from a nuclear catastrophe.
