The debate begins in Finland, as a result of which the country can apply for NATO membership.
Finland will decide in the coming weeks on the need to join NATO, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Wednesday, April 13, during a visit to Stockholm, Bloomberg wrote.
“A decision on NATO will be made in a few weeks,” he said.
Marin noted that he does not see the need for Finland’s decision on NATO to be done simultaneously with Sweden. But he wants both countries to “make the same choice.”
In this regard, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson did not confirm media reports that the country could join NATO this year.
Earlier, the Swedish newspaper SvD reported that “the prime minister intends for Sweden to join NATO in June this year.”
Prior to this, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Finland and Sweden could rely on NATO membership under an accelerated procedure.
The Federation Council of the Russian Federation said Finland’s possible entry into NATO would make it a target for Russia’s retaliatory measures.
