The UN Security Council discussed the situation around the ZNPP

Ukraine has called on the UN for the demilitarization of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the placement of a permanent IAEA mission there.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 24, the UN Security Council held a meeting regarding the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant occupied by Russia.

The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhiy Kyslitsa said that the IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhya NPP will record violations of security requirements created by the occupiers, so Russia does not allow inspectors to enter the facility.

“Obviously, any mission, whether it’s the IAEA or the UN, while on the station, will record gross violations of nuclear safety standards and requirements. Therefore, Russia is trying to avoid responsibility. But it will not succeed ,” said the diplomat.

He noted that the visit of the IAEA mission to the nuclear power plant “should be carried out in strict accordance with the national law of Ukraine and in full compliance with its international obligations.”

Kyslytsya recalled that Ukraine called on the organization to consider the issue of the permanent presence of its experts at nuclear power plants.

“Given the magnitude of the current challenges and threats, we also call on the IAEA to consider the possible permanent presence of its experts at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in order to restore full control of this nuclear facility by Ukrainian experts,” he said.

The diplomat noted that the mission should see the real situation, and not “a theatrical performance organized by the Russian Federation.” According to him, “the occupiers taught some of the captives what they should say and what they should show the IAEA.”

“I want us to gather here to hear what the whole world wants to hear. That is, the Russian Federation is demilitarizing the ZNPP, withdrawing troops and handing over the nuclear power plant to the Ukrainian government. Instead, we spend for more than an hour, missed this time to hear the chatter of fabricated sounds,” said Kislitsa.

He emphasized that Russia does not stop playing games with the international community.

“They had the courage to meet with the UN Security Council to discuss their own provocations, their own fear of the ZNPP,” the permanent representative said.

In this regard, US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Richard Mills said that Russian troops after capturing the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are using the nuclear facility as a springboard for warfare.

“Only they (the Russian leadership) can explain why their troops thoughtlessly attacked and seized control of the station, putting us on the brink of a nuclear disaster,” he said.

Mills recalled the appeal of the Russian ambassador in Vienna, who wrote “no mercy for the Ukrainian people.”

According to the permanent representative, Russia should immediately implement the recommendation of UN Secretary General António Guterres and create a demilitarized zone around the ZNPP, which will allow a group of IAEA experts to visit the facility, conduct an inspection and assess the security situation.

Mills urged the Russian Federation on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day to “not bomb schools, hospitals, kindergartens or nursing homes.” “We will continue to demand accountability for any violations of international law,” he added.

In turn, the Russian Federation said that “the mission of the IAEA to the Zaporozhye NPP has not taken place due to the” dirty games “of the UN Secretariat.”

It was earlier reported that the invaders shot down the ZNPP’s nuclear waste. As a result of mortar strikes on ash dumps, clouds of radioactive dust are formed, which are carried by the wind around Energodar.

Also, the invaders are trying to disconnect ZNPP from Ukraine’s power grid.
