Japan is considering deploying more than 1,000 long-range cruise missiles to boost its ability to deal with growing regional threats from China, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported Sunday.
The country plans to upgrade its current missiles to increase their range from 100 kilometers to nearly 1,000 kilometers, enough to reach the coast of China as well as North Korea, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources.
The newspaper claims that current ships and aircraft also need to be upgraded so they can launch new missiles capable of hitting targets on land.
geopolitical tensions
The missiles will be deployed around the southwestern region of Kyushu and on small islands in southwestern Japanese waters off Taiwan.
Japanese officials cannot currently be found to comment on this information.
Japanese military power is not officially recognized in the post-war constitution, and spending in this sector should be limited to defensive capabilities.
Recent geopolitical tensions, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or China’s increasingly aggressive attitude towards Taiwan, have prompted calls in the archipelago to review and improve Japan’s defense programs.
