In July, the largest EU countries for the first time did not offer Ukraine new military obligations.
The Politico edition refers to a study by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which notes that a similar downward trend in aid has been traced since the end of April.
The efforts of countries such as France and Germany may be weakening just at the moment when Ukraine is about to launch a counteroffensive.
The Institute’s data show that major European states are “not keeping up” with military aid coming from Britain, Poland and the United States.
Last week, Western allies met in Copenhagen to discuss support for the Ukrainian army, where they agreed on assistance worth 1.5 billion euros.
However, the head of the institute’s Ukrainian group, Christophe Trebesh, warned that the figure was “minuscule compared to what was collected at previous conferences.”
He noted that Europe should view the war in Ukraine as a Eurozone crisis or a coronavirus pandemic, to which hundreds of billions of emergency funding were sent. Overall European assistance to Ukraine is now a small part of this.
