The reason is his statement that Israel committed “50 holocausts” against the Palestinians.
Police in Berlin have launched a preliminary investigation into Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over his allegations that Israel committed “50 holocausts” against Palestinians, German broadcaster ZDF reports.
Abbas’s statement was reportedly made at his press conference in Berlin with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and sparked outrage in Germany, Israel and beyond.
Police on Friday confirmed Bild’s report that the investigation was launched over possible hate speech after receiving a formal criminal complaint. Downplaying the Holocaust is a criminal offense in Germany, but the opening of a preliminary investigation does not automatically mean a full investigation.
The German Foreign Ministry said Abbas, as a representative of the Palestinian Authority, would have immunity from prosecution because he was visiting the country on an official visit.
Germany does not recognize the Palestinian territories as a sovereign state.
It will be remembered that in a press conference in Berlin, Abbas accused Israel of repeating the Holocaust against the Palestinians. According to him, Israel has committed 50 massacres in Palestinian settlements since 1947 until today – “50 Holocausts”. Scholz, who was present at the press conference, did not comment on the words of the Palestinian politician, for which he was criticized by the opposition. However, he later came out with a condemnation of this statement on the social network.
