China’s Defense Ministry said participation in the drills was “not related to the current international and regional situation,” apparently referring to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Beijing will send a contingent of its troops to Russia to participate in joint military exercises involving several other countries, including India, Belarus, Mongolia and Tajikistan. This was announced by China’s Ministry of Defense on August 17, Radio Liberty reports.
The agency said participation in the joint exercise was “not related to the current international and regional situation,” apparently referring to Russia’s ongoing all-out invasion of Ukraine.
The study is part of an ongoing bilateral annual cooperation agreement, the statement said. Similar joint exercises led by Russia with the participation of China have taken place in recent years.
“The goal is to deepen pragmatic and friendly cooperation among the armies of the participating countries, increase the level of strategic interaction between the participating parties and strengthen the ability to respond to various security threats,” said message.
By the way, China is among the countries that refrained from imposing sanctions in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Earlier, the Chinese Ministry of Defense announced new military exercises and patrols around Taiwan in response to the visit of US congressmen.
