Ukraine urges Russia to withdraw from Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to ensure return to nuclear safety

Both Ukrainians and Russians blame each other for the constant bombings that take place near the nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday that Russia He “must” relinquish control of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant so that a return to nuclear safety can be guaranteed.

“The Russian army must leave the territory of the nuclear power plant and all adjacent territories. This must happen without any conditions and as soon as possible,” Zelensky said in a daily address to Ukrainians that he is recording.

In this regard, the President Ukraine ensured that “the ability to control the situation in Zaporozhye for the Ukrainian state, the international community and the IAEA can ensure a gradual return to normal nuclear safety.”

Zelensky explained that Ukrainian diplomats and nuclear scientists are in constant contact with the IAEA, who plan to send a mission to the nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian President He made these statements after the arrival of UN Secretary General António Guterres in Lviv and a few hours before their joint meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meeting took place at the invitation of Zelenskiy himself, according to Guterres office sources consulted by Europa Press who did not provide further details.

42 countries demand that Russia return nuclear power plants

A total of 42 countries and the European Union signed a declaration demanding the “immediate withdrawal” of Russian troops occupying the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

“The deployment of Russian military personnel and weapons at a nuclear facility is unacceptable and violates the principles of security and safeguards for all members of the IAEA,” the statement, which was signed, including by Spain, with reference to the International Atomic Energy Organization, says.

These countries are calling for the “immediate withdrawal” of the Russian armed forces “and any other unauthorized personnel” from the central Zaporozhye so that the Ukrainian authorities can resume their sovereign duties.

It will also allow the IAEA to carry out its verification functions in accordance with Ukraine’s obligations for the safe maintenance of the nuclear power plant.

China warns of risks in Zaporozhye

China’s representative to the UN Zhang Jun said in the Security Council that the accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant could be more serious than the nuclear accident at Fukushima in 2011.

“Nuclear power plant Zaporozhye It is one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe. If a large-scale nuclear accident occurs, it could be more serious than the Fukushima accident,” Jun said.

The Chinese representative urged the parties to exercise “restraint, act prudently, avoid actions that threaten nuclear safety.”
