Berlin believes that Moscow will use energy-related problems as a hybrid leverage within German society.
The German Federal Service for the Protection of the Constitution said it expects an increase in Russian propaganda and espionage activities in the coming months, Spiegel reports.
“Russia is using the problems related to Europe’s energy supply, in particular, as a hybrid lever,” the ministry said.
It has been noted that by spreading disinformation about gas shortages and rising prices, an attempt is being made to stir up fears about a possible shortage of energy and food in Germany.
“Russian propaganda is likely to intensify an extremist environment and fuel the narrative of a conspiracy to drive a wedge in our society,” the Constitutional Defense Service said in a statement.
The Russian state is also expected to “continue to intensify and adapt political and military intelligence efforts,” the ministry said.
According to the intelligence service, the war of Russian occupation and its effect on the economy and supply situation in Germany has a high potential for use by extremists.
It was previously reported that Germany’s accumulated gas reserves would last two months in the event of a supply cut.
