The Kremlin resorted to its favorite tactic – threats – after the devastation on the peninsula, the Center for Counteracting Disinformation notes.
Russian propagandists once again began to scare the world community with the “threat of the Third World War” after a series of explosions in the occupied Crimea. The Center for Counteracting Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine reported this on Wednesday, August 17.
To promote the narrative of the “inevitability of World War III,” the Russian media widely disseminated the words of Italian journalist Domenico Quirico.
The latter, in a commentary in La Stampa, expressed concern about the “Ukrainian attack” on Crimea. He expressed the opinion that the consequences could be catastrophic, because behind it was “the desire to destroy the unity of Russia.”
“If Zelensky, as he said in one of his last addresses to the people, decides to start recovering all Ukrainian territories from Crimea, then these six months will be hell,” said he.
The author explains such statements by the fact that for Russia the invasion of Crimea is “equivalent to an attack on Moscow.” In other words, a kind of “red line”.
“Thus, tactics of intimidation are one of the most used tools of the Kremlin to maintain the occupied territories of Ukraine,” the Center emphasizes.
Ukrainian and Russian officials acknowledged that an ammunition depot near Dzhankoy in northern Crimea exploded on August 16. A nearby railway and electrical substations were also damaged there.
In addition, according to Russian media reports, smoke is rising near the Gvardeisky air base in central Crimea.
A report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) states that explosions at Russian military facilities in the Dzhankoy region of Crimea on August 16 caused significant damage and severely disrupted the supply of the Russian army.
