In Spain, 20 passengers were burned after they jumped from a train engulfed in flames near Castellón in northeastern Spain.
The train travels from Sagunto in the eastern province of Valencia to Zaragoza. The driver stopped the train and prepared to turn around, but many passengers panicked and ran, breaking the windows.
Two victims with the most severe burns were evacuated by helicopter. Others, including a girl about 10 years old, were taken to nearby hospitals.
In Valencia, more than 1,000 people were reportedly evacuated from their homes and two firefighters were burned.
As smoke from a forest fire in central Portugal engulfed the skyscrapers known as the Four Towers in Madrid, 400 km from the burning forest, residents of the Spanish capital complained of a strong burning smell.
The fire in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela National Park started on August 6 and was largely contained by Sunday, but flared up again on Monday.
More than 1,100 firefighters, with the help of 13 aircraft, put out the fire, which has already destroyed more than 17,000 hectares of forest.
Satellite imagery showed plumes of smoke stretching from the west of the Iberian Peninsula to its eastern half and beyond Madrid.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, fires destroyed more than 270,000 hectares of forest in Spain in 2022, which is more than the 15-year annual average of 70,000.
In Portugal, fires have destroyed around 85,000 hectares of forest (almost 1% of the country), the highest in the European Union.
As previously reported, 660,000 hectares of forest burned in Europe due to abnormal heat – this is a record figure since 2006.
