The Panamanian authorities reported this Sunday that six alleged victims of sex trafficking, all Colombian citizens, have been rescued and the alleged trafficker, also Colombian, has been captured.
This was stated by the Director of the Office for Combating Human Trafficking Ministry of Public Security (Minseq)Daira Campos, who elaborated that the operation that enabled this “rescue” took place in Paitilla and Via Argentina, two wealthy neighborhoods in Panama City.
One of the women was discovered by law enforcement officials while “wandering around in a physical condition that indicated she may have been under the influence of drugs,” the official said without further details.
Terrifying statistics for 2022
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that so far this year they have identified in Panama “72 trafficking victims and a total of 52 traffickers were convicted for this crime, mostly Colombians, Panamanians and Venezuelans.”
“It is important to highlight that so far in 2022 the victims rescued from this scourge (trafficking) are women and girls, all for this purpose” of sexual exploitation. “Colombian citizenship accounts for 29% of those convicted of this crime, the highest recorded figure in the Republic,” Campos said.
Internationally accepted concept human trafficking It defines it as a crime in which a person is captured, transported, transferred, received or held for the purpose of exploiting him sexually, at work or otherwise.
Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of human organs, as defined by the United Nations. (EFE)
