Abnormal heat destroyed 660 thousand hectares of forests in Europe, which became a historical record.
In Europe, 660,000 hectares of forest have burned due to abnormal heat, a record figure since 2006. DW reports.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), this year fires broke out not only in Mediterranean countries, but also in other regions of Europe. For example, the largest forest fire in recent decades occurred this summer in Slovenia.

EFFIS Coordinator Jesús San Miguel noted that in 2022, drought and extreme high temperatures swept across Europe, and this caused massive forest fires in the region. “The situation is threatening – it’s only in the middle of the fire season,” San Miguel warned.
It was noted that most of the forest area was destroyed by fire in Spain – 225 thousand hectares. Romania (150 thousand hectares) and Portugal (77 thousand hectares) also suffered.
In recent days alone, large forest fires have been recorded in France, Germany and Greece. At the same time, in the north of Germany, only on Sunday, they managed to extinguish the forest fire in the Harz National Park, which raged for several days in an area of at least 13 hectares.
In addition, on August 14, a fire that had been burning for several days on the Greek resort island of Thassos was partially brought under control. Four fire planes, five helicopters, hundreds of firefighters, volunteers, and even military units were involved in putting out the fires. More than 13,000 hectares of forest fires have engulfed Greece this year, according to civil defense authorities.
It was previously reported that in Britain, a record heat wave caused a drought. Britain has recorded its driest July since 1935. The drought has spread almost across the country.
