The incident happened after 4 am local time. A man drove his car into a barricade at the corner of East Capitol and Second streets. He then got out of the car that burst into flames from the impact and fired several shots into the air, Capitol police said in a statement.
When the police approached the man, he shot himself.
The man’s name has not been released. It appears he did not intend to attack members of Congress on vacation, police said. Investigators are studying the man’s biography.
