Head of State Egils Levits believes that the previous government was too generous in issuing residence permits and visas to all Russians.
Latvian President Egils Levits said the government should review issued residence permits and visas and cancel them for those who support the Russian military invasion. This was reported by the Delfi agency.
According to the President, future residence permits should not be issued to permanent residents of Latvia who in the future will obtain Russian citizenship. Besides, these people must leave Latvia.
Egils Levits believes that the previous government distributed residence permits to Russian citizens excessively, which contributed to the development of bilingualism in the country.
“The trading of residence permits by previous governments, their unjustified generosity in issuing residence permits to Russian citizens, where only the interests of some political businessmen were hidden, created security risks and contributed to bilingualism. It is time to change the consequences of this unsuccessful and dangerous policy,” said Levits. .
The President stressed that Russia has always been an imperial country that threatens its neighbors.
“The killing of innocent people, torture, humiliation, deportation, deprivation of human dignity – everything that is happening now in Ukraine happened here, here, in Latvia,” said the head of state.
Note that Latvia has not issued tourist visas to Russians since February 24, 2022, but other countries continue to do so.
