United Nations Secretary General, Anthony Guterresexpressed his “clear commitment” to the denuclearization of North Korea this Friday during a visit to Seoul, after Pyongyang declared that he was “ready to mobilize” his nuclear arsenal.
Guterres arrived in Seoul on Thursday from Japan, where he delivered a speech on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the first ever nuclear attack on Hiroshima.
“I would like to reaffirm our clear commitment to the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the People’s Republic of Korea North Koreasaid the head UN meeting with South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol.
The goal, Guterres added, is “to ensure peace, security and stability throughout the region.”
North Korean tests
The United States and South Korea recently warned that North Korea was preparing for its seventh nuclear test.
This very Thursday Pyongyang blamed Seoul for the outbreak COVID-19 on its territory and threatened to “wipe out” the power of a neighbor from the south.
The Kim Jong-un regime has carried out a long series of weapons tests this year, including the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time since 2017.
At the end of July, the North Korean leader even announced that his country was “ready to mobilize” its nuclear deterrence forces in the event of a military conflict with the United States or South Korea. (AFP)
