The head of the Austrian government became the first Western leader to visit the Kremlin since Russia’s war with Ukraine began.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, after a visit to Kyiv on Monday, April 11, flew to Moscow and held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The meeting lasted 75 minutes, no statement was made, but the chancellor provided some details, Krone Zeitung wrote.
In particular, Nehammer noted that his talks with Putin sent a clear message. But on the other hand, as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, he clarified to the Russian president that the war should end.
Nehammer noted war crimes in Ukraine and noted the importance of their international investigation.
“This war must be stopped, because in a war there are only losers on both sides,” the chancellor stressed.
He also described the meeting as tough, open and direct, which was not a friendly visit. At the same time, he added that despite all the differences, there is no alternative to direct talks with Russia.
On April 9, Nehammer visited Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
