A new virus of animal origin, christened Langyahas infected dozens of people in China, according to scientists who have ruled out the risk of human-to-human transmission of the virus for now.

langia virus genipavirus (LayV) causes symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough, nausea, and headache.

Scientists believe that the shrew, a small mammal with a pointed snout, could be the animal that transmitted the virus to humans.

According to a report published in early August by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), a leading American medical journal, 35 people were infected in China.

According to the study, the patients, mostly farmers, had neither “close contact” nor “general contact” with the pathogen, implying “sporadic” infection among humans.

Some have developed blood cell abnormalities. Others had impaired liver and kidney function, according to the report.

What is known about the new Langya virus

Langya it was first discovered in 2018 but only recently officially identified.

Scientists consider it premature to conclude that the virus can be transmitted from person to person, given the small number of cases.

More research is needed to better understand the diseases associated with the virus, according to researchers from China, Singapore and Australia who contributed to the report.

So far there have been no serious or fatal cases LangyaVirologist Linfa Wang of the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, one of the authors of the report, told the Global Times.
