The plot may be revenge for the January 2020 assassination by Americans of General Qassem Soleimani, sources said.

The US Department of Justice announced that Shahram Poursafi, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been charged with attempting to kill former White House adviser John Bolton and former CIA director Mike Pompeo. This was reported by CNN on Thursday, August 11.

It is said that this plot is “probably revenge” for the removal of the Americans in January 2020 of the head of the Corps, Qasem Soleimani. Prosecutors said Poursafi, a 45-year-old Iranian national, tried to pay someone in the US $300,000 for Bolton’s murder and said he had a “second job” worth $1 million. It could be an assassination attempt on Pompeo.

According to channel sources, the Justice Department told the ex-secretary of state that he was one of the targets of the assassination conspiracy.

Poursafi admitted that in order to get the killer, he contacted someone in the United States who was secretly working as an informant for the FBI.

The Iranian asked him if he could hire someone to “remove some”, referring to Bolton.

Poursafi is charged with “using interstate commerce to commit murder for hire”, which carries up to 10 years in prison, and “providing material support to a transnational assassination conspiracy”, for which he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison

In turn, Bolton told CNN that he was “ashamed of the low price” he was allegedly offered for his murder.

It will be remembered that on January 3, 202, the United States removed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani from Baghdad airport. Then US President Donald Trump said Soleimani was preparing attacks on four US embassies.

In response, on January 8, Iran fired missiles at two American bases in Iraq, where the US contingent is located. Then in Iran, this blow was called revenge for the killing of Soleimani.

Iran later compiled a list of 48 people allegedly involved in Soleimani’s assassination.
