Pentagon chief Austin visited Latvia and discussed aid to Ukraine

The US Secretary of Defense discussed some issues with the Latvian government, in particular, support for Kyiv.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Latvia on August 9-10. During the visit, he met with the country’s President, Prime Minister and Defense Minister. This was reported to the Pentagon on Wednesday, August 10.

The parties burned, in particular, the aggression of Russia and support for Ukraine.

“During these meetings, he (Lloyd Austin – ed.) thanked the government of Latvia for supporting Ukraine, defending itself from an unprovoked and unjust Russian war, as well as for Latvia’s hospitality, which hosts rotational US military forces. ,” the message said.

The American official also discussed the security situation in the region with the Latvian government. The interlocutors also agreed on the thesis of the importance of supporting Ukraine and the implementation of the decisions of the last NATO summit in Madrid, held in June this year.

Austin noted the importance of the US-Latvian defense relationship.

The US Secretary of Defense visited the Lielvarde air base. Here he met with the US military, stationed in Latvia to deter Russian aggression in NATO’s eastern flank, and thanked them for their service.

Recall that both parties of the US Congress support the transfer of ATACMS missile systems to Ukraine, the projectiles of which have a range of more than 280 kilometers.

In addition, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov spoke on the phone with Lloyd Austin. The parties discussed strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
