Moscow plans to buy Shahed-191 and Shahed-129 UAVs from Tehran, according to Western publications.
The Russian military has been training with the Iranian-made Shahed-191 and Shahed-129 strike unmanned aerial vehicles in recent weeks. These actions may indicate that the Kremlin will buy them, CNN reported on Wednesday, August 10.
“For the past several weeks, Russian officials have been conducting exercises in Iran as part of an agreement to transfer UAVs from Iran to Russia,” a US official said in a commentary to the publication.
He noted that intelligence data on the exercises had recently been declassified.
The publication also turned to the Russian Embassy in the United States for comment.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that Russia had “no comment on this” when asked about the drones.
Ukraine has asked the US to provide more powerful armed drones, such as the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, but the US has refused to provide them, fearing that Russia might consider it an overreach, the publication added.
Earlier media reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to open a plant for the production of Bayraktar drones in Russia. This information has not been officially confirmed.
In addition, Peskov said that Russia is ready to destroy the plant for the production of Bayraktar TB2 drones, which they plan to build in Ukraine.
