The government of US President Joe Biden has announced that it will “quickly and orderly” end policies that keep asylum seekers waiting in Mexico for justice to resolve their cases.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made the announcement Monday night after a judge struck down an injunction that prevented Biden from overturning the Migrant Protection Protocols (known as “Stay in Mexico” or MPP) imposed by his Republican predecessor. Donald Trumpin 2019.
DHS is “committed to terminating enforcement of the MPP by court order as soon as possible,” the statement said.
“People are no longer re-enrolled in the MPP, and those who are currently in the MPP in Mexico they will be discharged as soon as they return on the next scheduled trial date. People who unsubscribe from MPP will continue with the deletion process in the United States,” he adds.
Secretary of National Security Alejandro Mallorcas believes that being in Mexico “It is seriously flawed, incurs unnecessary human costs, and diverts resources and personnel from other priority border security efforts.”
Shortly after coming to power Biden he tried to eliminate politics as part of what he called a more humane approach to migration.
But several Republican-led states, led by Texas, sued the federal government, and the court ruled that the policy be reinstated.
It came to Supreme Courtwhich on June 30 authorized the government to close this program.
From the start of applying the policy in January 2019 until Biden paused it the first time at least 70 000 people were sent to Mexico, according to American Immigration Boardnon-profit organization.
“Thousands of people are still waiting in Mexico a good chance to apply for asylum, every day we wait to bring them back is another day when their lives and safety remain at risk,” said Kate Melloy Guettel, legal director of litigation for the American Immigration Board.
Data
Between December 2021 and June 2022, when you live in Mexico returned to force, 9,563 people participated in this program, most of whom came from Nicaragua.
During tenure Bidenmore every month 200 000 people who tried to enter the country were sent back under the pretense of being in Mexico or the public health ordinance introduced by the pandemic, known as Section 42.
The United States will continue to enforce Section 42, which in practice allows authorities to block people at a land border, DHS said.
