They recalled that on August 6, shelling was recorded near the dry storage of spent nuclear fuel at the ZNPP, which caused some damage, but the available radiation measurements continue to show its normal level in the area.
It was also noted that there was no visible damage to either the fuel containers or the protective perimeter of the facility.
In the process, the shelling damaged the communication cables that were part of his radiation monitoring system, which could have affected the operation of three radiation detection sensors.
The IAEA noted that the shelling violated nearly all seven irreplaceable components of nuclear and radiation safety, including those related to the physical integrity of the nuclear power plant, the functioning of safety and security systems, the provision of personnel and external power sources.
“Following the incident, Ukraine reported to the IAEA that plant personnel restricted access to the ZNPP internal crisis center, which could affect response in case of an emergency, even though access to an external center was remains possible,” the statement said.
In addition, the IAEA added that the Ukrainian regulator SNRIU said its communication with the Zaporizhzhya NPP was “very limited and fragmented.”
The head of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, reiterated the need for the organization’s specialized mission to arrive at the station as soon as possible “to help stabilize the nuclear safety situation.”
It will be recalled that on August 6, Russian aggressors fired twice at the ZNPP. The power unit No. 4 were killed at the station. Energoatom reported that the nitrogen-oxygen station and the combined auxiliary building were damaged as a result of the shelling.
