Erdogan uses talks between Ukraine and Russia for election campaign – media

Turkey’s leader is using diplomatic successes to “cover up” economic failures ahead of the election, Reuters believes.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is using the situation to resume grain exports from Ukraine in his election campaign. Reuters reported this on Tuesday, August 9.

The news agency notes that a series of diplomatic victories is giving the Turkish president a “respite” from Turkey’s economic woes. He is using his diplomatic successes in his election strategy for the elections to be held in 2023.

The media added that this would be the toughest test for Erdogan in his nearly 20-year rule. In particular, the development at the international level contrasts with the gloomy picture of the economy at home, with inflation rising to 79% and the lira hitting a record low in December last year.

Opponents accuse Erdogan of misguided economic policies. They criticized a series of interest rate cuts despite high inflation and the dismissal of three central bankers since 2019, leaving the country with a large current account deficit and dependence on external financing to support the economy.

The Turkish president himself said that the results of the government’s economic policy – the priority of export, production and investment – will increase in the first quarter of 2023.

It will be remembered that Erdogan plans to propose to Europe the creation of an “energy corridor” for the transit of gas through his country at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan.

Earlier it was reported that Erdogan and Putin agreed to begin a partial payment in rubles for Russian gas supplies to Turkey.

In addition, Erdogan said that Turkey “cannot refuse Russian gas and damage relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
