At least one person died and five were injured Tuesday in a munitions explosion at a military airfield on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, authorities said.
“Several ammunition intended for aviation exploded in a warehouse located on the territory of the Saki military airfield, near the city of Novofedorovka,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement released by Russian news agencies.
The fire did not occur as a result of shooting or bombing, the same source specified, without specifying the causes of these explosions.

At first, the Russian army claimed that there were no casualties, but later the leader CrimeaSergei Aksyonov reported that one person had died.
“Unfortunately, one person died. I express my deepest condolences to his family, ”Aksenov wrote on Telegram.
In turn, the local Minister of Health Konstantin Skorupsky indicated that five people were injured, including a child.
Local authorities also reported that 30 people had been evacuated from Novofedorovka.
Shortly before that, they said that there were “several explosions” near the military airfield.
In videos posted on social media, a fireball formed after a loud explosion, and thick clouds of black smoke shot up into the sky.
Russian forward line of attack
CrimeaUkraine’s peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014, is at the forefront of a military offensive Russia against its Ukrainian neighbor since the end of February.
Russian planes take off almost daily from the peninsula to strike targets in Ukraine and in various regions. Crimea they are within range of Ukrainian weapons and drones.

“Tourists are not in danger. We ask them to remain calm,” the elected Russian MP said in CrimeaAlexey Chernyak.
