South Korea is in trouble because of the rain. This Monday, it was reported that at least eight people had died and six were missing due to flooding caused by heavy rains that have haunted Seoul for 80 years, local officials said on Tuesday.
Parts of the South Korean capital, as well as the port cities of Incheon and Gyeonggi provinces, experienced heavy rains of more than 100 millimeters (mm) for hours on end, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Among the victims, the authorities South Korea found two middle-aged women and a teenager, all from the same family, who were in the basement, trying to protect themselves from rains.
Rainfall even exceeded 140 millimeters (mm) per hour in the Dongjak area of Seoul, the heaviest rainfall recorded in 60 minutes since 1942.
In addition to casualties, heavy rains caused flooding of houses, vehicles, buildings and subway stations, the aforementioned agency reports.
The flooding left five people dead and four more missing in Seoul, while three people died and two went missing in the rest of Gyeonggi province.
The US also suffers from rain
Flash flooding caused by heavy rains has killed at least eight people in eastern Kentucky, with some residents trapped on rooftops and trees, the south-central US state governor said Thursday.
“This is going to be the worst flood in recent memory, devastating and deadly,” Andy Beshear told WLEX.
“We are going to get a double-digit death toll. Right now, I think we can confirm at least eight, but the number seems to be increasing every hour.”
Japan: urgent evacuation of 200 thousand people due to heavy rains
Japanese authorities demanded the evacuation of cities in the north of the country with a population of about 200,000 due to heavy rains that raised river levels, leaving two people missing and several bridges destroyed.
Public broadcaster NHK said non-mandatory evacuation notices have been issued to 200,000 residents in five counties: Niigata, Yamagata, Fukushima, Ishikawa and Fukui.
Authorities have warned of the risk of landslides and flooding, said government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno, who confirmed two people were missing.
