This week, the EU approved a new package of sanctions that would ban any Russian and Belarusian road transport company from delivering goods by road within the EU, including transit.
On Saturday, April 9, Latvian border guards barred 152 trucks with Russian and Belarusian license plates from entering the country due to the start of new EU sanctions, ERR reports.
Customs representative Andreis Vaivars noticed that none of the vehicles were subject to exemptions from penalties, so they were not allowed.
According to him, the first drivers knew nothing about the new restrictions, but on the day the information spread and after that the flow of trucks from Russia and Belarus dropped sharply.
Recall that this week the EU approved a new package of sanctions, which provides a ban on any Russian and Belarusian road transport enterprise to deliver goods on the road within the EU, including transit.
Exemptions are provided for certain specific products such as pharmaceutical, medical, agricultural and food products, including wheat, as well as humane road transportation.
An exception is also made for goods moving into the territory of EU countries between the Kaliningrad region and the main territory of the Russian Federation.
Recall that trucks from Russia and Belarus must leave the territory of the European Union before April 16.
