More than 80,000 tourists are stranded on southern China’s Hainan Island after authorities canceled all flights and trains due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
About 500 cases of COVID-19 were reported this Sunday in the resort of Sanya, with a population of more than a million people, on the island of Hainan, known as “Chinese Hawaii”.
All flights from Sanya, a popular surf destination, were canceled this weekend and train ticket sales were suspended.
The authorities indicated that in order to leave the island, tourists must present five tests for COVID-19 carried out within seven days.
Hotels in the city will have to offer customers a 50 percent discount until restrictions are lifted, the official said.
