Italy, which gets about 40% of its gas imports from Russia, is trying to diversify its energy supply.

Italy wants to replace Algerian Russian gas. On Monday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi will visit Algeria to sign a new agreement. On Saturday, April 9, Reuters said, citing its own sources.

The agency wrote that the delegation representing Italy will include the head of Italy’s energy group Eni, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and Energy Minister Roberto Cingolani.

The media also said that agreements have already been reached between the countries and now only the signing of relevant documents is required.

Italy, which receives about 40% of its gas imports from Russia, is trying to diversify its energy supply.

Earlier this week, the Rome official said Italy was in talks with seven countries and some talks were “at a very advanced stage.”

Algeria is the second largest supplier of gas to Italy. The pipeline, laid at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, is capable of pumping more than 110 million cubic meters of gas per day, but less than 60 million cubic meters is carried.

“Draghi will sign an institutional agreement between the countries, and then Eni and the Algerian state-owned oil and gas company Sonatrach will agree on the technical aspects,” the source told Reuters, and added that the agreement will also include common investments in renewable energy projects.

Recall that most MEPs voted in favor of a resolution calling for the immediate introduction of a complete embargo on oil, gas, coal and other fossil fuels from Russia.
