The European Union could grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership in June, believes Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna.
“Ukraine has received an application for EU membership. We have already done a lot of preparations, so we are ready to act quickly. We expect to receive candidate status in June,” Stefanyshina tweeted on Saturday, April 9th.
He added that the candidate status is part of “our recovery and victory against the Russian aggressor who wants to change the democratic course of Ukraine.”
It should be noted that a summit of EU leaders will be held in June, where a decision can be made on Ukraine.
The other day, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, gave President Volodymyr Zelensky a questionnaire, whose completion was a necessary step to give Ukraine the status of an EU candidate.
Zelensky said that Ukraine will be ready with answers within a week.
According to Deputy Head of the Office of the President Igor Zhovkva, Ukraine has already submitted 70% of the required information to the European Commission.
“When we sign an association agreement or when we join the ENTSO-E system, we give the European Commission information about what is happening in Ukraine, what is the state of the economy, energy in the case of ENTSO-E , so we only need to submit to the European Commission about 30% of such information, “he said.
Recall that Zelensky signed an application for joining the EU on the fifth day after the start of the Russian invasion. He asked the bloc to allow Ukraine to immediately obtain membership in accordance with a special procedure. On the same day, the EU officially began the procedure for consideration of Ukraine’s application.
On March 10, EU leaders approved the conclusions in which they announced their intention to further strengthen relations and cooperation with Ukraine, without mentioning giving the country the status of candidate for EU membership.
