Ministry of Foreign Affairs Russia today summoned the Norwegian Ambassador to Moscow, Rune Resaland, to make a strong protest against the actions of the Norwegian consul in a hotel in the city of Murmansk, in the Russian Arctic, and to announce his expulsion.
“August 4, Norwegian Ambassador R. Resaland was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, who was given a strong protest in connection with the unacceptable behavior of Consul Elisabeth Ellingsen in a hotel in Murmansk, which allowed herself insulting statements by Russophobes,” Russian diplomacy reported.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it took into account the statements of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry regarding the “outrageous incident” and stressed that after the incident, “E. Ellingsen’s permanence on the territory of Russia is impossible.”
The scandal erupted after a Norwegian diplomat made racist comments at the reception of a hotel in the city, about 250 kilometers from the border with Norway.
The official, outraged by the service, said: “I hate the Russians!”
“I’m used to cleaning rooms, I’m from Scandinavia. I don’t look like a Russian woman who cleans anyway,” she added.
The rudeness was recorded by the hotel’s cameras and spread on social networks, which caused an extremely negative reaction from the hotel administration. Russian authorities.
Norway’s response
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “the sentiments expressed (by the diplomat) do not reflect Norwegian politics or the Norwegian attitude towards Russia and the Russian people” and said that he was addressing the situation “through the proper channels.”
