The US has imposed new sanctions against Russia in response to the war in Ukraine, which includes more than 30 organizations and 13 individuals, including people from the Kremlin’s inner circle, such as former gymnast Alina Kabayeva.

“The Treasury Department will use every tool at our disposal to ensure that the Russian elite and Kremlin collaborators are held accountable for their complicity in a war that has claimed countless lives,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The new sanctions were extended to Andrey Guryev, founder and former vice president of PhosAgro, a leading chemical company in Russia. The Cayman Islands-flagged businessman’s $120 million Alpha Nero yacht is on a new list of blocked assets. Guryev has already been sanctioned. United Kingdom.

Other names include Viktor Rashnikov, the majority shareholder of one of the world’s largest steel producers, MMK, as well as two subsidiaries. This businessman was previously under sanctions from Australia, Canada, the EU, Switzerland and the UK.

Also from the elite closest to Putin, Alina Kabayeva, Athens 2004 Olympic champion and current head of the National Media Group; and Natalia Valerievna Popova, First Deputy Director of Innopraktika, a non-governmental development institute, a technology company based in Russia.

The Biden administration specified that the sanctions apply to the financial institution Promising Industrial and Infrastructure Technologies Joint Stock Company “for attempting to circumvent previously imposed sanctions on RDIF.”

The State Department specified that Washington added Russian oligarchs to the list, such as tycoon Dmitry Aleksandrovich Pumpyansky, former president of OAO TMK, Russia’s global steel pipe maker; Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, Chairman of the Mining Commission of the Bureau of the Board of Directors of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and businessman Alexander Anatolyevich Ponomarenko.

Russia may sever diplomatic relations with the US

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zazharova said that Moscow is ready to break off diplomatic relations with the United States if Washington finally declares them a state sponsor of terrorism.

U.S. authorities announced last week that they were exploring the possibility of designating Russia as such, in another step in the sanctions imposed on the nation led by Vladimir Putin for invading neighboring Ukraine.

On Zazharova, lawmakers have already approved all “existing sanctions” against Russia and have verified that they have been “ineffective” overall, with which they now appear to be banking on “more powerful weapons,” the agency said. News of Russia TASS.
