Lithuania expands temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees

Every day, citizens of Ukraine submit 30-40 new applications for a temporary residence permit in Lithuania.

Lithuania extended the action of temporary protection for Ukrainians to flee from the war for another year – until March 4, 2027. It was reported on the Lithuanian government website.

“The European Union has agreed to expand temporary protection since the war is not over. We have suggested to do the same in Lithuania with the help of this government’s order,” said the acting prime minister Rimantas Sajyus.

According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, 30-40 new statements from the Ukrainians for a temporary residence permit based on temporary protection are registered daily.

According to September 9, 2025 data, 47,534 people had this permit home (in July 2024 there were about 44 thousand, and in November 2023 – about 52 thousand).

Remember, on July 15, the European Union Council decided to expand the action of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine to March 4, 2027.

On September 16, the EU Council approved the general framework for moved Ukrainians to ensure their stable return and reunion in Ukraine, if conditions were allowed, as well as a gradual transition to other residence status for those who had the right to do so.
