The Taliban denied the White House offer to return the United States to the Bagram air base and called “not intervening in internal activities.”
The Taliban government has denied the proposal of US President Donald Trump to return to Washington’s control at the Bagram Air Base, which Taliban acquired four years ago after the removal of American troops from Afghanistan. The corresponding statement was made by the Taliban Zabihull Mujahid representative, reports the Associated Press.
“Afghanistan is pursuing a policy focused on the economy and striving for constructive relations in all states based on mutual and common interests. We encourage the United States to comply with a policy of realism and reasonableness,” Mujahid said.
According to him, during the bilateral communication, the American side has always been for the Taliban government, the independence and integrity of Afghanistan territory is of utmost importance.
“It should be noted that, according to the Dochia Agreement, the United States has promised not to use force and that it is not a threat against the integrity of the territorial or political independence of Afghanistan, nor does it interfere with the country’s internal activities,” said the Taliban representative.
He added that the United States should remain faithful to its obligations.
The history of the Bagram air base began in the 1950s, when it was built with Soviet support. During the conquest of Afghanistan, the USSR used the bagram as a key point for the placement of troops and flying. After the release of Soviet troops, the basis was passed on to Afghanistan authorities, though over the years of conflict its infrastructure suffered significantly.
Earlier, US president Donald Trump threatened to Afghanistan with serious consequences if the base control was not restored to the United States. Trump also said the United States will try to recover the control of the Bagram air base in Afghanistan.
