Nuclear security is violated in the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.
As a result of a complete invasion of Russia and the occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, almost all the pillars of nuclear safety were violated at the “nuclear”. Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Agency for the Agency for Nuclear Energy, said during a speech before the IAEA Management Council, the Agency press service reports.
According to him, the invaders violated six of the seven pillars of nuclear security – key components of nuclear and physical protection determined by the IAEA at the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
These include:
- physical integrity;
- equipment maintenance;
- Lack of pressure on staff;
- reliable power source;
- continuous logistics;
- radiation control;
- The functioning of communication channels.
Grossy said that the “atom” is provided by only one external transmission line that creates serious risks. All six reactors are at a cold stop, and none of them can work safely.
In addition, the water level in the cooling pool decreased to 13.4 m. The critical threshold is 12 m, if below – the cooling system is not failure.
Nuclear experts say that it is necessary to create a pumping station in order to ensure stable operation of cooling systems.
On August 12, we will recall that as a result of the irresponsible attitude of the administration of the occupation to ensure the safety of the APP and ignoring the requirements of nuclear and radiation safety at the site of the Kakhovsky reservoir, destroyed by the Russians, dry weapons occurred. The State Inspectorate of Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine stated that this fire was not affected by a radiation background.
