Washington is seeing more and more signs that Moscow is setting conditions for an attempt to annex Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and part of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye regions.
According to the US ambassador to the United Nations (UN), there shouldn’t be any doubt that Russia wants to cut off Ukraine “and completely remove it from the world map.” Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated this on Friday, July 29, at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Ukraine.
As the US ambassador noted, Washington sees more and more signs that Moscow is putting conditions for an attempt to include Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and part of the Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine. Why “puppet authorities in Russian-held areas are being created to hold fictitious referendums or adopt decrees on joining Russia,” the AP news agency quoted the diplomat as saying. At the same time, according to Thomas-Greenfield, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov “even said that this is a military goal of Russia.”
The American diplomat criticized those states saying “the security of one country should not be ensured at the expense of the security of another,” asking rhetorically: what did they call Russia’s invasion of Ukraine then. He did not name a country, but this opinion was often expressed at the UN by representatives of China. In particular, China’s deputy UN ambassador Geng Shuang told a Security Council meeting: “Attempts to put one’s own security above the security of others, strengthen military blocs, establish absolute superiority … will only lead to conflict and confrontation, and divide the international community”
Thomas-Greenfield also criticized countries calling for diplomacy without naming Russia. “Let’s be clear: Russia’s continued actions are an obstacle to resolving this crisis,” he stressed. And again he did not name a single country, although a significant number of states in Africa, Asia and the Middle East followed this method, recalls AP.

Remember, Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow’s military goals in Ukraine “now go beyond Donbass”, Moscow is aiming at the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
Russia’s goals will expand if the West continues to deliver long-range weapons to Kyiv, such as high-mobile HIMARS artillery missile systems, he said.
GUR believes that with such statements, the Kremlin is “creating the ground for resolving the status of the temporarily occupied southern territories” through annexation.
