The Kyiv Court of Appeal changed the sentence of the Russian military Vadim Shishimarin, who was found guilty of killing a civilian in the Sumy region of Ukraine.
According to Play, a panel of judges replaced the convict with a life sentence for 15 years in prison.
Vadim Shishimarin, 21, became the first Russian citizen to be convicted of war crimes during the Russian invasion in 2022. He was accused of violating the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder.
According to the investigation, supported by the court, on February 28, Shishimarin ended up in the village of Chupakhovka, Sumy region, along with four other servicemen after his column was broken.
The military fired on and seized the car. On the way, they saw a civilian, 62-year-old Alexander Shelipov, talking on the phone. By order of the senior in rank, Shishimarin shot the man from a machine gun. He later surrendered. In court, the Russian military fully admitted his guilt in the murder.
